The term martorana fruit derives from the Palermo Monastery La Martorana, only the nuns knew the secret of the preparation of this typical dessert.
Legend has it that on the occasion of the visit of Pope Clement V, which took place in winter, the nuns decorated two bare trees with apples, grapes and marzipan figs. Marzipan paste also called royal paste is made with peeled almonds, powdered sugar, lemon or orange essence and vanilla.
From this mass a perfect imitation of fruits, vegetables or fish are reproduced.
